My painting "Lady Baltimore: The Universal Muse" was selected by the jury to be displayed in the "Built2Last Exhibit" at the landmark Peale Center (Peale Museum). This 2026 juried exhibit celebrates Baltimore's architectural icons- buildings that have withstood time, change and civic upheaval. the carved figure of Lady Baltimore stands atop the landmark Battle Monument in downtown Baltimore.

As a preservationist working for the City of Baltimore, I lead the restoration of the Baltimore Battle Monument – twice. As an artist, I am humbled by our “Monumental City’s” treasures. The themes of the Exhibit are fundamental and of cultural universality and transcendence.

I have long wanted to paint Lady Baltimore and I can find no portrait of her alone. She expresses her own artistic legacy, the tradition of a crowned woman as protector of a city or people. Rooted in ancient times, and like her ancestors, she wears the turreted crown. Her symbolism continues.

There is spirituality in human creativity. Lady Baltimore is a Universal Muse, representing timeless human inspirations and aspirations. She appeared over 200 years ago during a time of turbulence and promise. She stands at an intersection of art and science as does the Peale Museum. I painted her at eye level against the night sky. After all, Baltimore is the home of the Hubble and James Webb telescopes. The flame inside us connects us to the cosmos around us.
